Dry matter to as-fed, and back
Feeds are quoted on a dry-matter basis and fed as they are, so “3 kg of silage” and “3 kg DM of silage” can differ threefold. This converts either way.
How long will this feed last?
Bales in the stack against mouths in the paddock. Useful the day you decide whether to buy more or start selling stock.
Which feed is actually cheaper?
A price per tonne tells you almost nothing: you are buying water and energy in different proportions. Cents per megajoule is the number that ranks them.
And the ones that need a model
These three are conversions — arithmetic on numbers you supply. The moment a question needs an assumed intake or a requirement, it needs the engine: what a class of stock needs to eat, whether a diet delivers it, and which of energy, protein or gut fill runs out first.
